Roma are considering a move for Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren as an alternative to Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, according to reports in Italy.

Alderweireld’s £25 million release clause has expired but there is still talk of him leaving Spurs before next week’s transfer deadline. Roma have been credited with an interest in the Belgian.

But Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness) claims Roma are now plotting a move for Lovren. The Croatian would apparently be cheaper than Alderweireld and Roma are said to have a good relationship with Liverpool following recent deals for Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker.

However, Italy’s Il Messaggero (as relayed, again, by Sport Witness) believes Roma could make one final offer for Alderweireld despite the fact Tottenham are likely to demand more than the £25 million he could have been signed for last month.

Effectively, Liverpool could help Spurs keep hold of Alderweireld if they sanction Lovren’s transfer to Roma. The question is: do Tottenham want to risk losing Alderweireld for nothing next summer when his contract expires?
