Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson says Tottenham shouldn’t be ruled out as Premier League title contenders this season.
Last term Liverpool came incredibly close to winning their first title in 30 years, racking up 97 points but narrowly missing out on the grand prize to Manchester City. Of course, the Merseysiders ended up beating Spurs in the Champions League final, their sixth European Cup victory.
Despite sitting in third for most of the campaign, Tottenham finished fourth in the Premier League last term, falling away at the end after prioritising their Champions League run and ending up below London rivals Chelsea in the final standings.
But Henderson believes Spurs could give City and Liverpool a run for their money this time around if the Londoners’ performance against Juventus in pre-season is anything to go by.
“Everyone will talk about Liverpool and City because they won the league and were so good and we won the Champions League,” Henderson said (via the Star).
“It is easy to do that. But you have to look at the other teams. They are going to improve.
“I watched Spurs against Juventus in a friendly and they were outstanding.
“There are more teams than us and City who will be competing.”
Tottenham beat Juventus 3-2 courtesy of Harry Kane’s stunning winner from the halfway line. Mauricio Pochettino’s men went on to secure victories over Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the Audi Cup in Munich.
Liverpool and Manchester City will face off in the Community Shield final at Wembley this weekend, while Spurs welcome Aston Villa to their new stadium in the Premier League curtain-raiser a few days later.
