Roma are closing in on the signing of former Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente, according to reports in Italy.

Llorente’s contract with Spurs expired at the end of June, although the Londoners are yet to officially confirm his departure. There has been talk of Tottenham offering the Spaniard a new contract, but he has not been training with the club in pre-season.

Calcio Mercato, citing other reports in Italy, claims Roma are close to signing Llorente, although first they want to sell one of Edin Dzeko, who is being linked with Inter Milan, or Patrick Schick – a former Spurs target.

There is a good chance Roma have offered Llorente better terms than Tottenham, or perhaps the Serie A club were able to offer him more regular first-team football. He was no more than Harry Kane’s deputy in north London.

Llorente attained something of a cult status last season with his goals against Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City in the Champions League knockout stages. The 34-year-old also played a crucial role in the comeback against Ajax in the semi-finals.

It’s unclear whether Spurs are looking at other centre-forwards to provide back up for Kane.
