Tottenham’s second half performance against Aston Villa on the opening day of the new Premier League season was near perfect, but there was a lingering issue after the game.
Jan Vertonghen was left out of the starting line-up despite not being injured. There have since been suggestions the Belgian’s contract situation played a part in Pochettino’s decision – Vertonghen has just a one year left on his current deal.
In his post-match interview with Sky Sports, Pochettino was asked why Vertonghen was omitted from the XI. The Spurs boss appeared to suggest the centre-back must earn his place back in the team. Watch below.
