Heung-Min Son says he “can’t wait” to play for Tottenham against Newcastle United on Sunday after missing the first two games of the season through suspension.
The South Korean was sent off in Spurs’ penultimate Premier League game last season, a 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth. Juan Foyth also saw red at the Vitality Stadium, but the result thankfully had no effect on the team finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League once again.
Regardless, Son apologised at the time and has said sorry again now ahead of his first appearance of the new campaign, explaining what happened against Bournemouth when he was dismissed for retaliating to a challenge in the first half.
“We were losing and the guy was in my head a little bit,” Son told the Daily Star. “There was a foul. Everything comes together and I lost my head. But I will learn from these situations. It will never happen again.
“It’s been almost three weeks now I couldn’t play and it was really painful watching my team-mates. I am sorry for what happened. But I’m ready to go now and I can’t wait.
“I can’t promise I’ll do better than last season but this is my goal. I’m improving still, I’m hungry.
“This team deserves to win something. We are missing the last step many, many times. But we are ready to win something.”
Tottenham have started well without Son, coming back to beat Aston Villa 3-1 on the opening weekend before snatching a 2-2 draw at Manchester City. Son scored twice at the Etihad in the Champions League last season, but this time goals from Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura were enough to earn the Londoners a point.
