Tottenham travel to Colchester United in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, and Mauricio Pochettino has a number of decisions to make regarding his team selection.

The Spurs boss will probably use this game to hand opportunities to some young players, but he will try to strike a balance between youth and experience.

Paulo Gazzaniga is likely to continue between the sticks, with Ben Davies and Kyle Walker-Peters coming in at full-back.

As for the centre-backs, Juan Foyth should make his first start of the season. Japhet Tanganga will be in the squad after being left out of the Under-23s’ match on Monday, but Pochettino will probably pick Davinson Sanchez so that the back four isn’t too inexperienced.

Eric Dier will surely make his first appearance of the campaign. We don’t think two holding midfielders are necessary, so Victor Wanyama should be on the bench, with Oliver Skipp and Moussa Sissoko providing a bit of drive on either side of Dier.

This is the perfect game for Dele Alli to build some fitness and confidence. He could play behind a front two of Lucas Moura and in-form striker Troy Parrott – the Irishman also missed Monday’s Under-23s game.

Here’s our predicted XI to face Colchester – what’s yours? Let us know in the comments section below.

  1. Not a bad squad. Lucas and Parrot yes, Alli Skipp Winks and Ndombele for my midfield with hopefully Sessengon Davies Sanchez Aurier.. I believe Alderweirld Vertongen Ericksen should be played only in the PL as we build team chemistry for beyond their foreseeable exits at the end of this season.

  2. On the evidence of Saturday, VW needs game time. So I expect him to start and ED could be asked to be centre half with the carrot of captaincy. Also Foyth unlikely to be fit.

Given CE’s performances this season, he needs game time too. So Troy on bench.
Otherwise, I expect your suggested line up.

  3. Pochettino need to test his first eleven not putting players like this we are weak already.. We need a strong team can he not remove winks, Sissoko in our midfield those guys are useless..
