Tottenham fans have been calling for Harry Kane to become their new club captain after his mesmerising performance in their Premier League victory over Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.
Kane, who has worn the armband for England since May 2018, is currently Spurs’ vice-captain, and has experience of captaining his boyhood club in the past when Hugo Lloris has either been injured or suspended.
The 26-year-old continued his fine goalscoring form for club and country in 2019/2020 – his first-half winner against the Saints was his tenth goal in as many matches and his sixth in eight matches for Spurs this season.
But it wasn’t just Kane’s goal that caught the eye, his all-round determined display, which was easily his best performance in a Tottenham shirt this season, saw fans take to Twitter, pleading for the England striker to replace Lloris as captain in the near future, especially after the Frenchman’s howler gifted Danny Ings an equaliser.
You can see some of those responses below.
Make Harry Kane captain at half-time for the love of god.

After watching the two stupidest deserved bookings I’ve ever seen and our club captain chuck the ball into the net, thank god for Harry Kane. Give him the captaincy and be done.

That’s the kind of performance that makes Harry Kane so under appreciated by fans of other teams (not that it matters).
He lead from the front when his team were in trouble, absolute leader of men, and deserves to be captain.

Dear spurs, Please make @HKane captain, for christ sake. I've said it a thousand times, hugo can always pull a worldie reaction save out of the bag, but give him to to think and he often picks the wrong choice. His physical reactions are better than his mental ones.

Huge win for Spurs. 10 men from 40 minutes you expect the worst. Still not perfect but it’s the points that matter today. Harry Kane immense. Surely the captain sooner rather than later. #THFC
