Mauricio Pochettino says he wants to be Tottenham manager for “five more years at least” amid questions about his future.

The Spurs boss has seen his job security come into question after a difficult start to the season. Tuesday’s humiliating 7-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League raised further concerns about the harmony between the manager and his players.

But in his press conference on Friday ahead of this weekend’s Premier League meeting with Brighton, Pochettino was defiant about his position at the club, insisting he plans to be with Tottenham for a lot longer.

“On Monday I was the best and after Tuesday I am the worst,” he said (via Reuters). “That is the reality when you lose and you cannot defend yourself.

“In five-and-a-half years I think in every single press conference we are talking about my future. I hope… I am going to spend five years more here at least.

“Football is a game to enjoy and when you don’t win it is difficult to enjoy but you can’t create a drama. And we are not going to create a drama.”

Pochettino has dropped plenty of hints – both before and after the Champions League final – about his time at Spurs gradually coming to an end, so it is surprising to see him verbally commit his long term future to the club.

That said, he may feel he wants to end his tenure on a high, and leaving in the near future would not allow that to be the case. Perhaps he wants to lift a trophy before departing; the FA Cup is his best chance of winning silverware this season.
