Tottenham’s Under-21s defied the odds and did what the first-team couldn’t as they beat League Two side Colchester United on penalties in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday evening.
Just two weeks after Mauricio Pochettino’s side were humiliated in the 3rd Round of the Carabao Cup, Wayne Burnett’s men travelled to the JobServe Community Stadium for their Group A encounter looking to get their first win after narrowly losing to Ipswich Town in their group stage opener last month.
Luke Norris’ goal just before the break put the U’s on course for their second consecutive victory in the competition, but 19-year-old midfielder Tashan Oakley-Boothe struck with 16 minutes remaining to force spot-kicks.
Luis Binks, Armando Shashoua, Timothy Eyoma, Tariq Hinds and Malachi Fagan-Walcott were all successful for Spurs, whilst Harvey White, who was part of the travelling part to Munich for the Audi Cup earlier this summer, struck the post.
But it proved numerical as Colchester midfielder Brandon Comley missed the target and Tottenham ran out 6-5 winners and move above Gillingham and up to third in the table.
