Toby Alderweireld says matches against Red Star and Liverpool this week will provide a “big opportunity” for Tottenham to get back to winning ways after a dreadful run of form.

Spurs are without a win in their last three games across all competitions, suffering humiliating defeats to Bayern Munich and Brighton before the international break and labouring to a draw with Watford on Saturday.

This week, Mauricio Pochettino’s side face Red Star at home in the Champions League before a daunting visit to Liverpool in the Premier League. With questions marks hovering over the the futures of Pochettino and many of his players, including Alderiwelreld, it could be a make or break pair of fixtures for Tottenham.

But Alderweireld is confident ahead of two matches he believes must be looked at as opportunities for Spurs to turn their form around.

“You can see it two ways,” he said (via the Daily Mail). “It’s a big opportunity for us on Tuesday. We must use that.

“Then Sunday is a big opportunity. Look, we’re a team, let’s go again. Let’s go, like that second half. Our best, it’s all we can do.”

Despite Tottenham’s shaky defensive performances of late, Alderweireld is likely to keep his place alongside Jan Vertonghen in the defence against Red Star, unless Pochettino thinks it’s finally time for a change. In that case, Juan Foyth may be given his first start of the campaign.
