Paulo Gazzaniga was “outstanding” for Tottenham and deserves “credit” for his performance against Liverpool on Sunday, according to Virgil van Dijk.
The Spurs goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves in the opening 45 minutes, keeping the visitors ahead until he was beaten by Jordan Henderson’s accurate finish seven minutes into the second half.
He could do little about Mohamed Salah’s winner from the penalty spot as Liverpool turned things around at Anfield after Harry Kane had given Tottenham lead inside a minute. We gave Gazzaniga a 9/10 in our player ratings – read more here.
One of the Argentinian’s best saves came when he tipped over a powerful Virgil van Dijk header in the first half, and Liverpool’s talismanic defender only had good things to say about Gazzaniga after the game.
“Gazzaniga was outstanding,” Van Dijk said (via the London Evening Standard). “We have to give him credit for that. We had a feeling that it [the goal] would come anyway, but he saved a couple of good ones. You have to deal with that and we scored a deserved equaliser and in the end it was all good.”
It’s good to know that Spurs can rely on a stand-in goalkeeper as good as Gazzaniga until captain Hugo Lloris returns from a dislocated elbow in the new year. But hopefully Mauricio Pochettino’s men will not have to rely so heavily on Gazzaniga in upcoming games.
