Harry Kane has revealed exactly how he comforted Heung Min Son at training on Monday – and reassured him that Andre Gomes’ sickening ankle injury at Goodison Park on Sunday wasn’t his fault.
Gomes suffered a horrific broken ankle after a collision between Son and his Tottenham team-mate Serge Aurier in the latter stages of the 1-1 draw against Everton.
Son, who was reduced to tears and unconscionable, was initially booked for the challenge before referee Martin Atkinson upgraded the decision to a red card after the severity of Gomes’ condition quickly became apparent.
However, Spurs appealed the decision and saw Son’s dismissal overturned, which means he’ll be available for their upcoming Premier League games either side of the international break.
Despite his distress, Son has travelled to Belgrade and is available for Tottenham’s crucial Champions League clash against Red Star this evening. Kane, who is also expected to return against the Serbian’s after missing the Everton game due to illness, spoke to the media on Tuesday and was questioned about the South Korea’s condition.
“First of all, I want to wish Andre Gomes a speedy recovery. Obviously I wasn’t there at the game but I watched it on TV and it looked horrendous for everyone so I wish him and his family the best of luck with his recovery,” Kane told Football.London.
“With Sonny, I saw him when I went into training on Monday morning, I gave him a little hug and I told him that it wasn’t his fault. Obviously I know Sonny very well, I know what type of guy he is and I know that that sort of event would have hurt him a lot.
“With the players and the manager and everyone consoling him and making sure he is all right, I think he’s started to feel a bit better. Of course, it’s a very unfortunate situation but he knows that he has to put it to the back of his mind and try and concentrate on the game we have tomorrow.”
Kane added: “Unfortunately [such injuries] are part of the game, obviously none of us want to be a part of that, none of us want to see it, it’s an unfortunate situation but it can happen with the speed we play at, with the intensity we play at.
“It’s one of those actions that didn’t go the right way. From Sonny’s point of view and all of our points of view, it’s unfortunately part of the game, we know things like that can happen.”
Maybe he should go and tell Gomes that. Nobody from Spurs been to see him. Look him in eyes. Pochettino was happy that Son is in a good place. Your club are rotten and I’m not an Everton fan.
