Jose Mourinho singled out Lucas Moura for his “amazing” defensive contribution after Tottenham’s comprehensive win over Burnley on Saturday.

Lucas was on the scoresheet as Spurs thrashed the Clarets 5-0 in north London, bouncing back from their disappointing 2-1 defeat to Manchester United last week. Goals from Heung-Min Son and Moussa Sissoko, plus Harry Kane’s brace, secured Tottenham’s most convincing victory yet under Jose Mourinho.

It was also the first clean sheet of the Mourinho era. Despite Burnley coming close to beating Paulo Gazzaniga, particularly in the first half, Spurs managed to keep the visitors out, making the margin victory all the more impressive.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho was keen to praise Lucas for the defensive work he put in on the right flank.

“At half time I told them the clean sheet should be a collective ambition,” Mourinho said (via Football London).

“So it goes in the direction of the defensive process. Everyone defended well. I can tell for example that Lucas was amazing, Lucas was amazing in the defensive process.”

Many supporters have also noticed an improvement in the defensive side of Son’s game, meaning Mourinho has been able to solidify Tottenham on both wings in order to protect the full-backs.

Thankfully, Lucas and Son are still permitted to get forward as often as possible, as proven by their goals at the weekend.
