Juan Foyth could seek an exit from Tottenham in January if his game time does not improve under Jose Mourinho, according to the Athletic.

Foyth began to play more regularly for Spurs last season, and Mauricio Pochettino used the centre-back at right-back in pre-season before he picked up an ankle injury. He has since returned to fitness and played on the right for Argentina, but Mourinho deployed him at centre-back against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

That was his first appearance since Mourinho took charge, and despite impressing in spells, it seems Mourinho has settled on a preferred centre-back partnership of Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld, with Jan Vertonghen on the left.

As a result, the Athletic claims Foyth may prefer to leave Tottenham in the winter transfer window. But is there a way the 21-year-old could be given more first-team football without breaking up the current centre-back partnership?

Football London’s Alasdair Gold has suggested Foyth should be given an opportunity to play in the defensive midfield role if Eric Dier fails to rediscover his best form. It would make sense with Dier struggling for consistency and Foyth possessing all of the traits to flourish sitting in front of the back four.

Do you think Foyth should get a chance in midfield? Let us know in the comments section below.

  1. I have always liked Foyth and I believe he has a very bright future ahead of him.He can play in different positions which is very important. He is a little bit too casual at times but that will be sorted out with time and experience.
There is no way that we could let a player of his calibre leave and all must be done for him to stay and play more often.

  2. I have seen Foyth as a potential in the defensive mid role based on two factors: He’s a bit too rash as a central defender and he’s a good passer from the middle. Jose’s mentioning of his performance in the post-game press conference gave me the sense that he could envision Foyth playing that role in the future. At this point, he’s miles better than Dier. I can only hope the latter is getting so much playing time as they are putting him in the shop window?

  3. We should keep him as Dier is not at the top of his game but I am worried about his game as he is a bit rash at times and we can’t keep playing with 10 players
