First-half goals from Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela helped Tottenham squeeze into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough.
George Saville replied late in the game for the Championship side, but Jose Mourinho’s men held on to set up a clash with Southampton in the next round.
Here’s how every Spurs player rated on the day.
Paulo Gazzaniga, 5 – Made a sharp stop in either half, but will be extremely dissapointed with the part he played in Saville’s late goal.
Japhet Tanganga, 8 – Another superb performance from the youngster, who was actually voted the official man of the match, and rightly so. Came within inches of grabbing his first Tottenham goal in the first-half and was generally excellent at both ends of the pitch. A future right-back possibly?
Davinson Sanchez, 4 – Poor from start to finish.
Jan Vertonghen, 7 – Much better than in recent weeks. Made some finely-time tackles.
Ryan Sessegnon, 6 – Didn’t produce anything out of the ordinary, but another assured display from the teenager, whose standout moment was a fine run and strike in the opening period that was tipped around the post. Defended well, too.
Harry Winks, 6 – Kept Spurs ticking over all night and did exactly what was required of him.
Eric Dier, 5 – Sloppy throughout.
Christian Eriksen, 4 – If Liverpool on Saturday wasn’t his farewell performance, then this definitely was. Another poor showing from the Dane.
Giovani Lo Celso, 7 – Opening the scoring with a well-composed effort and generally linked up well and looked dangerous all evening.
Erik Lamela, 7 – Back in the starting XI and back in the goals. Never stopped throughout and was rewarded with a fine individual goal in the 15th minute to double Spurs’ lead.
Lucas Moura, 6 – Started upfront on his own and was energetic, making a number of unselfish runs. Should have done better with a first-half chance that he dragged wide.
Substitutes:
Heung Min Son, 6 – Busy from the moment he arrived, but wasn’t able to score his first goal since that stunner against Burnley last month.
Dele Alli N/A – Should have added a third late on.
A mixed buffet. Lo Celso and Tanganga were positive but not adding Lamella to that list since one never knows when he will be injured again.
Dier, Winks have limitations, Moura’s 1st touch continues to let him down, only think to wish from Sen now is gets some dollars, perhaps PSG, and defence (Sanchez, even a slightly better Jan) continues to be a nightmare. Lack of a good CDM is telling.
Spurs still need new Dedender because Sanchez Davinson was sloppy and if no new defender then Spurs will concede goal from.other team every week
Why Jose keeps Eric Dier while he knows Eric sloppy I haven’t seen him.playing well so far Eric quality of passing was very poor Defenithy Eric has no skill with passing
Why JM persists playing that coward Eriksen is beyond me.Very poor mansgement.And to those who say he wants to put home in the shop window to get better money for him, the way he has been playing for last 12 months can only diminish his value.
Sanchez had a nightmare last night and granted he has been good this season, but so was Dier for several years but now look at him the last 18 months.
Eriksen is total rubbish last night was the absolute pits how any club in the world would buy buy him totally amazes me, i wouldnt buy him for a fiver. Dier and Winks are crap any decent team would have taken spurs to the cleaners.
This is the first decent set of marks I have seen. Congrats. Mr Sanders. How other have given high marks to Eriksen and Dier, the latter was awful with his passing,is beyond me
