Jose Mourinho is on the verge of making his first signing as Tottenham manager after Portuguese midfielder Gedson Fernandes passed his medical at Hotspur Way on Monday, according to the Evening Standard.
The 21-year-old will join on an initial 18-month loan deal – with Spurs having the option to buy the Benfica man on a permanent basis in the summer of 2021 for around £55m.
Fernandes has made seven league appearances for the Primeira Liga leaders this season – although only two of those have been starts and will provide cover for Moussa Sissoko, who is out for three months with a hamstring problem.
The report says that the deal could be completed before Tottenham’s FA Cup 3rd Round replay against Championship Middlesbrough on Tuesday evening, although Fernandes would be unable to feature because he wasn’t registered before the first game last Sunday.
Fernandes has already been pictured at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, watching Spurs’ 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League (see below) and could possibly be presented in front of his new home fans this evening if the deal is confirmed.
