Tottenham tried and failed to sign Ajax defender Edson Alvarez in the January transfer window, according to reports in the Netherlands.

Alvarez, 22, only left his native Mexico last summer, joining Ajax from Club America. After regularly starting at the beginning of the campaign, the centre-back has barely featured since November, making just 11 league appearances all season.

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf claims Alvarez was open to leaving Amsterdam in January, with Spurs and LA Galaxy both showing a ‘concrete’ interest. However, Ajax manager Erik ten Hag and club director Marc Overmars both blocked the move.

Despite his failure to secure a move away during the winter window, Alvarez will seek an exit in the summer if his situation does not change, according to De Telegaaf’s report.

Tottenham have already been linked with a centre-back today, with Italian outlet Tuttosport reporting Jose Mourinho is keen to reunite with Manchester United’s Chris Smalling – read more on that story here.

Regardless of who it ends up being, a centre-back is very likely to arrive in the summer with Jan Vertonghen’s contract coming to an end and Spurs struggling to become solid defensively with their current personnel.
