Emmanuel Petit believes Tanguy Ndombele will become a hit in the Premier League if the Tottenham midfielder gets in shape and adds consistency to his game.
Earlier this week, we relayed a report from the Mirror that suggested Barcelona may offer Ndombele a summer exit route out of Spurs, where he has struggled to adapt since becoming the club’s record signing last year.
Though Ndombele has shown flashes of brilliance, fitness and form issues have hindered the his game and Jose Mourinho has been vocal about the Frenchman’s subpar performances.
Petit, who won the Premier League with Tottenham’s bitter rivals Arsenal, believes his countryman has the talent to be a star in England but must first become more consistent.
“We all know the potential of Ndombele,” Petit told the Sun. “I like this type of player and I used to watch him in France.
“He was not regularly a top player. Sometimes he could play a beautiful game – then three days later be average.
“He is not consistent enough. He doesn’t play well with any regularity.
“He has quality but I agree with Mourinho in that Ndombele could do much more.
“When he is very motivated, fit and ready, with his mind and body, and when he has the ambition to perform well, he becomes a top player.”
The Sun’s headline (‘Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit slams £65m Tottenham flop Tanguy Ndombele – claiming he lacks fitness and focus’) paints Petit’s comments as solely negative, but there is a hint of hope in his quotes that is shared by Spurs fans.
If Ndombele can get fit and motivated, there is no doubting he has the talent to become one of Tottenham’s most important players.
