Jose Mourinho faces the task of convincing Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to sanction a deal for Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier this summer, according to ESPN.
Yesterday we relayed a L’Equipe story claiming Mourinho has been in touch with Meunier’s representatives ahead of a possible free transfer to Spurs when the Belgian’s contract expires at the end of the season, whenever that may be.
And now, ESPN is reporting that Mourinho has spoken to Meunier personally to convince the right-back to ignore Borussia Dortmund’s advances and join Tottenham instead.
However, it is understood Mourinho must now convince Levy of Meunier’s credentials. ESPN believes Levy wants to bring the average age of the squad down, and Meunier turns 29 in September.
The 40-time Belgium international has plenty of experience which obviously appeals to Mourinho, who will be desperate to add more solidity to his defence for next season.
However, Levy probably wants to reduce the squad’s average age as older players are less valuable than their younger counterparts, and so their sell-on value is significantly inferior.
If Mourinho truly wants Meunier, hopefully he can convince the man in charge. But right now it looks like the deal has already hit a snag.

Like it or not trophies will come once our financial foundation is strong and academy continues to provide Tanganga Parrot or Winks level players and we develop them through loans and first team chances into solid PL players. We have history and a great future ahead once we dont try to buy trophies by just spending big on transfers
I think right now we should wait and see. All that’s happening/ being reported is conjecture. What NEEDS to happen is that Jose has time to work with a FULLY fit squad of players and implement his own systems. The time to make judgement is at the end of next Season.
None of us REALLY know what goes on within the club. Poch was brilliant for us but towards the end he wasn’t. Results don’t lie.Jose is a serial winner, he even won 2 trophies at Man Utd and was considered past his sell by date. Let’s see if he can actually do what he’s been doing for years, win trophies.
He needs the time, no point in changing manager at this stage. Rumours will abound, unless I see a player actually playing for Spurs I won’t believe all the gossip/Rumours going round.
It’s a business guys. Winning trophies is important too….would love to win PL and CL but building a World Class facility and a strong balance sheet are vital for survival. Ndombele for Semedo and Umtett first, promote Skipp and or Amos, play Fernandez buy Dias and sign Meunier for free then we can play a consistent 3 4 3 or 4 3 3 with or without the ball.
