It is ‘increasingly likely’ Jan Vertonghen will leave Tottenham when his contract expires at the end of next month, according to ESPN.

Vertonghen has made over 300 appearances across all competitions since joining Spurs from Ajax in the summer of 2012, working his way up the vice-captain role and becoming a fan favourite.

Just last season, the Belgian was still a regular starter at centre-back and – despite entering the twilight of his career – could still fill in at left-back, playing an instrumental role on the flank against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League Round of 16.

However, he was dropped from the team by Mauricio Pochettino at the beginning of this term and has looked unfit throughout the campaign, with Jose Mourinho so far failing to turn the 33-year-old’s form around.

ESPN believes Vertonghen has been unable to agree a two-year extension on his £70,000-a-week deal, and so it looks like he may have played his last game for the club.

Tottenham supporters will hope that, if safe to do so, the Premier League can return before June 30 so Vertonghen can be given a proper on-pitch goodbye.
