Tottenham are on the verge of capturing the signing of Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after agreeing a £15m fee with the Saints, according to the ever-reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano at the Guardian.

Spurs have been chasing the Denmark midfielder, who has just one year remaining on his Southampton contract, for a number of weeks, and look to have fought off competition from Everton to secure the services of the former Bayern Munich man, who has made 109 Premier League appearances since making the switch from the Bundesliga champions.

With Eric Dier moving into the back-four, Jose Mourinho has made his intentions clear about wanting to buy a defensive midfielder – and looks to have finally got his man, who is expected to agree personal times before signing a long-term contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the coming days.

Hojbjerg will become Mourinho’s third signing following Gedson Fernandes and Steven Bergwijn – and will be another major boost to the Portuguese’s squad.

In a separate deal, the report from the Guardian also confirmed that Kyle Walker Peters, who enjoyed a successful loan stint at St Mary’s during the second half of last season, will move the other way after Tottenham accepted a £12m bid for the 23-year-old defender.
