Jan Vertonghen is having a medical at Benfica ahead of a proposed move to the Portuguese club on a free transfer, according to BBC Sport.

The 33-year-old was released by Tottenham at the end of last season and has been linked with a host of European sides over the past few months, including Manchester City.

Vertonghen, who made over 300 appearances for Spurs, enjoying seven successful seasons in north London – and will go down as one of Tottenham’s best centre-back’s in the Premier League era.

According to reliable-Belgium journalist Kristof Terruer, Vertonghen wanted to move to a ‘beautiful’ city and sign for a club that will be playing European football next season.

The ex-Ajax man is expected to sign a three-year contract in Lisbon, and will be playing in the Champions League in 2020-2021 as long as Benfica make it through two one-legged qualfying rounds after their second-place finish in Primeira Liga last term.
