Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks has withdrawn from Gareth Southgate’s England squad – although the reasons haven’t yet been announced.
The 24-year-old was in line to face both Iceland and Denmark in the Nations League on Saturday and Tuesday, but was removed from the squad last night along with Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and replaced by Aston Villa man Jack Grealish.
It’s unclear whether Winks has picked up an injury, although the midfielder was absent from both of Spurs’ pre-season friendlies against Reading on Friday and Birmingham City on Saturday.
Winks did feature in Tottenham’s first friendly against Ipswich Town seven days earlier, but the club are yet to comment on why he missed out at the weekend.
His withdrawal coming less than two weeks away from the start of the Premier League is obviously a major blow to Jose Mourinho, although it might be a familiar case of Spurs not wanting Winks risked so close to a new campaign – especially with Mourinho’s men facing the prospect of nine games in 20 days across September and October.

Hope it’s not Covid 19 related or the ankle injury resurfacing.
