Tottenham youngster Japhet Tanganga has revealed he was scouted by Chelsea before joining Spurs’ academy.
The 21-year-old was speaking in an episode of Amazon’s All or Nothing documentary about Tottenham’s 2019/20 season, in which Tanganga features prominently.
Episode three of the series charts the defender’s rise from youth prospect to first-teamer at Spurs – Tanganga was handed his Premier League debut by Jose Mourinho against Liverpool last term.
And having recently signed a new long-term contract with the club, the centre-back – who can also play as a full-back – may have a big future with Tottenham.
But it could have all turned out differently.
During his interview for the documentary, Tanganga revealed something “not a lot of people know” – Chelsea were watching him before he became a Spurs player.
His local ties to Tottenham probably played a part in his final decision to remain in north London.
And given his rapid trajectory to date, that could turn out to be a very good thing for Spurs.
It will be interesting to see if Tanganga plays more regularly next season.
