Jose Mourinho believes Son Heung-min “deserves” a new contract and thinks Tottenham will reward the South Korean “sooner or later”.
Son has been in stunning form since the start of the season, building on his improvement over the last two or three years by becoming one of the Premier League’s most consistent goal scorers.
His partnership with Harry Kane has been particularly fruitful to Spurs so far this term, with the pair wreaking havoc against the likes of Southampton, Manchester United and West Ham United in recent weeks.
With three years remaining on Son’s current contract, Mourinho says there isn’t anything to worry about for now – but Tottenham should be attempting to tie down one of their prize assets in the near future.
“I would love [him to sign a new contract],” Mourinho said (via the London Evening Standard). “Son has three years of contract, so it’s not like we’re in an extreme situation of everybody being worried. It’s more that Son loves it here, I believe that he would like to commit his future to the club for a long time.
“Everybody at the club is totally in love with this player and this boy and is trying also to make him feel part of the furniture. It’s normal the club tries to go from three years to four or five or six, I don’t know. It’s normal.
“But it’s a very calm situation because Sonny has three more years of contract. But I wish [for him to get a new contract]. He deserves one. The club knows that and sooner or later, without any pressure, they will arrive into a decision.”
Son came off the bench to keep up his scoring run against LASK in the Europa League on Thursday night. He looked a level above the rest of the players on the pitch in terms of quality, and right now he looks like finding the net past any opponent he comes up against.
With that in mind, a new contract for Son should be one of Spurs’ highest priorities.
