Tottenham lost for the first time since the opening day of the Premier League season – suffering an embarrassing defeat to Royal Antwerp in the Europa League.

Here’s how we rated the players on the day:

Hugo Lloris, 5 – Helpless with the goal. Nothing to do besides that.

Serge Aurier, 4 – Was that display at Old Trafford a one-off? Looked miles off it here.

Davinson Sanchez, 4 – Could have done more to prevent the pass for the goal.

Ben Davies, 3 – Made some impressive early clearances, but made a dreadful mistake for the winner.

Sergio Regulion, 4 – Comfortably his worst performance in a Tottenham shirt. Not on it.

Harry Winks, 4 – Wasteful throughout, summed up by a poor late decision when he opted to shoot rather than find a teammate.

Giovani Lo Celso, 4 – Looked rusty.

Dele Alli, 3 – Hooked at half-time for the second time this season. Awful decisions and lack of quality in the final-third.

Gareth Bale, 5 – The only attacker to come out for the second-half. More minutes in the tank, but didn’t do a great deal.

Steve Bergwijn, 3 – Not difficult to see why he isn’t making the Premier League squad.

Carlos Vinicius, 5 – Didn’t do too much wrong. Unfortunate to be replaced at the break.

Substitutes:

Lucas Moura, 4 – Wasteful.

Erik Lamela, 4 – So frustrating in the final-third. Needs to release the ball much quicker.

Heung Min Son, 3 – Missed Tottenham’s best chance just after the break and then another late on – snatching at both.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, 5 – Gave the back-four slightly more protection that Winks, but that doesn’t say much.

Harry Kane, 4 – Tried to make things happen. Had a late effort blocked.

  1. Need to play Bale in all games to get him match fit, which is what we would do with Kane or Son. Plus needs to play in our 1st team to give him confidence. An opportunity to have tried Kane and Vinicius up front together as we did need to score and would have offered alternative playing style. Need for a playmaker urgently required made more apparent, but please, not Erickson.

  2. Disaster to put out this starting team against Belgiums best, anyone surprised our players running low on confidence were never going to find it by starting here and Davies over Alderweireld in centre of defense with Sanchez ,what a combination , not !.Mo brainfreeze !

  3. I think Jose will have to always start with his strongest team, try and get an early lead of 2-3 goals, then bring on one or two fringe players. It is now blatantly obvious, it doesn’ work if you begin the other way around.

  4. I am afraid to say it but we will never see the Bale of 10 years ago his injuries have taken its toll.He is afraid to run at full steam because its likely he will pull a muscle and be out for weeks.
