Player ratings: Hojbjerg, Alderweireld impressive as Bale scores winner against Brighton

Gareth Bale scored a late winner as Tottenham climbed up to second in the Premier League after a 2-1 victory over Brighton.

Tariq Lamptey cancelled out Harry Kane’s penalty before the Welshman came off the bench to head home his first goal back in Spurs colours.

Here’s how we rated the players on the day:

Hugo Lloris, 7 – Could do little about Lamptey’s goal. Comfortable evening’s work, though.

Matt Doherty, 6 – Fortunate not to give away another penalty and struggled going forward. Still hasn’t really found himself just yet in this Tottenham side.

Eric Dier, 7 – Strong performance.

Toby Alderweireld, 8 – Absolutely outstanding from the Belgium, who did everything asked of him before playing a superb ball to Regulion for Bale’s goal.

Sergio Regulion, 6 – Will play far better, but came up with another excellent assist for Bale’s winner.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, 8 – Another terrific display from the Dane, who mopped up everything that came his way and should have been given a foul in the build-up to Brighton’s goal.

Moussa Sissoko, 6 – Worked hard and got Spurs up the pitch well.

Tanguy Ndombele, 5 – Booked early on and didn’t recover.

Erik Lamela, 6 – Tried to make things happen, but lacked quality. Did strike the post with a spectacular long-range effort, though.

Heung Min Son, 4 – A rare off night for the South Korean, who contributed very little.

Harry Kane, 6 – Tucked home the penalty, but missed a rare sitter late on – striking the post from close-range.

Substitutes:

Giovani Lo Celso, 6 – Covered lots of ground, but it didn’t really happen on the ball.

Gareth Bale, 7 – Came off the bench and almost assisted Kane, although he somehow hit the post before another header found the bottom corner for his first goal back at Spurs.

Ben Davies, N/A – Replaced Son late on when Tottenham were defending their lead.
