Matt Doherty is set for a run as Tottenham’s first-choice right-back again after Serge Aurier’s costly mistake against Leicester City on Sunday, according to Football Insider.
The signing of Doherty from Wolves in the summer has generally had a positive impact on Aurier, who has improved drastically and earned a regular spot in the Premier League starting XI this term.
However, the 27-year-old clumsily gave a penalty away just before half-time in the 2-0 defeat to Leicester, mirroring a number of errors he has made in the past.
And Football Insider claims Jose Mourinho was not impressed with Aurier reverting to type.
Their report claims Doherty will be re-instated at right-back over the festive period, giving the summer signing a chance to finally settle into the role ahead of a busy January.
Spurs face Stoke City in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night. Doherty will probably start and could stay in the team for this weekend’s trip to his former club Wolves.
With games coming thick and fast, Aurier is likely to get a chance to make up for his mistake in an upcoming game – perhaps he will start against Fulham on December 30.
But it looks like Doherty’s time has come. Let’s hope he can avoid the kind of errors Mourinho clearly detests.
