Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso has been ruled out for the rest of January with a hamstring problem.

Jose Mourinho is said to have confirmed the lay-off, via the London Evening Standard.

Lo Celso has missed the last few matches with the injury and will now sit out important matches in the EFL Cup, the FA Cup and the Premier League because of it.

Whether he would be featuring if fit anyway is up for debate after the Argentine – along with Erik Lamela and Sergio Reguilon attended – attended a party over Christmas despite coronavirus restrictions.

The Standard says Lamela will not feature against Brentford on Tuesday night because of the party, which suggests Lo Celso would also be dropped if available.

That said, Reguilon was among the substitutes against Leeds United on Saturday, but he didn’t make it onto the pitch as Ben Davies played the full 90 minutes at left-back.

It will be interesting to see if Reguilon starts against Brentford – rotation is surely a must with games in several competitions coming up.

Hopefully Lo Celso will return sooner rather than later as Mourinho will need him when the Europa League adds to Spurs’ busy schedule next month.

  1. Is this guy trying to steal lamelas crown as the new sick note. A Christmas party to add to the list starting to wonder have we bought a donkey.

  2. Not much doubt about Lo Celso’s ability, but looks very much as he will be a lemon as injury prone.
Obviously bought the wrong player: can you imagine if we had bought Grealish and/or Bruno Fernandes instead? Both never injured and scoring and making goals.

    • Good point.

I like LoCelso but yeah, the injury record isn’t the best so far. However, he has some way to go to catch up with Coco! ?

    • We have been so blunt and uncreative at times recently that fans are now looking to Dele and thinking he should be getting at least a few chances. When he’s played I don’t think he’s done that badly.

Typically Jose crucifies him for losing the ball that lead to a goal. Aurier barges someone in the box to give a pen away, Doherty gets a silly second yellow and nothing from the gaffer. I just wonder how that goes down with the squad…

  3. Couldn’t agree more with Davspurs comment.
Give Dele an extended run in the 1st team and am convinced that he will come good just as much as I am convinced that selling him would be one of biggest ever mistakes that we would rue eternally.
A message for Mourinho here; remember Lukaku,Salah and De Bruyne or are you going to maintain that letting them go was the correct decision?

    • It’s pretty obvious that Jose has a strict set of criteria when it comes to what he wants from players, unless you fit that then you will find yourself out in the cold.

It depends on the manager in question, Ferguson seemed to be able to get a tune out of more maverick type players but also maintain a culture of professionalism and hard work within the squad.

Crucially don’t see Dele fitting with what Jose wants from a tactical perspective. He doesn’t have room for a player like that in his midfield. He tends to favour two pace merchants in the forward line and two holding players. That leaves one slot between Dele, Tanguy, Gio (Winks too dependant on his role)

Then it’s a choice of Bergwijn, Moura, Bale, Vincius or Lamela up front alongside Kane and Son. That’s a lot of players with attacking intent that aren’t getting in the team.

If we win by being defensive then people say fair enough but when we don’t attack and finish teams off then calls to change it become louder. Especially with the players we have in the squad…

  4. It would be best interest for Spurs to offload Erik Lamela well known as unreliable player due to injury and poor play
Give Dele a chance until June ti see what is the outcome
    No confidence in Serwaign too

    • Lamela wouldn’t get in any top side regularly enough for anyone to be interested in buying him. He and his agent know that his role at Spurs (whatever that has become) is the best it’s going to get. Dies anyone know that his contact situation is?
