Senior figures at Tottenham are asking questions about the club’s failure to sign Ben Godfrey from Norwich City before he joined Everton last summer, according to Football Insider.
Godfrey has impressed for Everton since arriving at Goodison Park at the beginning of the season, just weeks after suffering relegation to the Championship with Norwich.
But if reports are to be believed, the 23-year-old centre-back could have been a Spurs player.
Football Insider claims the Londoners had been tracking Godfrey for a year before Everton swooped, leading Tottenham to pursue Swansea City’s Joe Rodon instead.
But with Godfrey clearly ahead of Rodon in terms of development, difficult questions are now apparently being asked at Spurs.
It is believed senior figures have launched an inquest into the failure to sign Godfrey – presumably questions are being asked of chairman Daniel Levy and the recruitment team.
Tottenham’s centre-backs have been below par all season, which is probably why there is frustration about failing to sign a promising young centre-back in the summer.
Perhaps, however, that is harsh on Rodon, who has genuine potential to become a first-team regular.
In any case, Godfrey could turn out to be the one that got away.
Not the first and for sure not the last.
Well swooped EVERTON
