Tottenham’s European hopes were dented even further following a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

An own goal from Sergio Reguilon and Ollie Watkins cancelled out Steven Bergwijn’s superb opener as Spurs suffered their 12th Premier League defeat of the campaign.

Here’s how every Spurs player rated on the day.

Hugo Lloris, 5 – Should have done better with Regulion’s own goal.

Japhet Tanganga, 6 – More than his own, but his rotten luck continued late on when he suffered a nasty late injury which saw him stretchered off.

Toby Alderweireld, 6 – Spurs’ best defender, but that said little.

Eric Dier, 4 – Watkins left him for dead with the winner, whilst some of his passing was shocking.

Sergio Reguilon, 2 – Let Aston Villa back into the game with a horrible own goal, slicing past Lloris, and his night when from bad to worse when his two poor clearances led to Watkins’ winner.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, 5 – Not his usual self, although his first half booking made for a difficult evening.

Harry Winks , 4 – Looked completely out of his depth at times. Tasked with being Spurs’ creator, and didn’t justify being preferred to both Giovani Lo Celso or Tanguy Ndombele.

Dele Alli, 4 – Didn’t quite happen.

Steven Bergwijn, 7 – Back in the team and finally ended his long wait for a goal with a cracking strike to open the scoring. Could, and perhaps should, have added to his tally in the second half but was twice denied by Emiliano Martinez.

Son Heung-min, 3 – Like so often in 2021, added nothing.

Harry Kane, 4 – Had one half-chance in the second half but blazed over on what was a frustrating night for the England skipper.

Substitutes

Gareth Bale, 4 – Should have been introduced far earlier, and failed to make an impact when he was finally brought on.

Tanguy Ndombele, 4 – Like Bale, not enough time to change the game.

Matt Doherty, N/A – Replaced Tanganga late on.

  1. Why did you say Hugo should have done better it was a sliced shot he got a hand to it. No keeper would have kept it out. Without kane, son and Hugo next year we are going to be shocking. I don’t blame them for wanting to leave its all down to Lewis levy and the board. They are the root of greed at spurs. We need a new team from keeper to striker. Too many rubbish players being carried this year by the efforts of kane and son. So another enic chapter will start. I forgot who it was that promised us the league or trophies in 5 years many years ago. Truth is after Sunday even arsenal in there worst season will finish above us and with a game to go we can’t catch west ham. Enic have been a great success. Charging fans sixty quid to watch harrys last game. Burnley fans got in for free but I guess that is what greed does to you. Any fan who buys any ticket for next season is mad because you are just endorsing enic to continue with more of the same.

    • agree this is only going one way and its not going up no more will this spiv outfit get anymore of my season ticket money the only way is a massive boycott vote with our feet

  2. I want to talk more about Mason’s selections. He probably sees Winks like himself. A young English player needing a chance. But like Mason, Winks is not at Spurs level. It showed in the first game at home to Everton, Hojberg and Winks are both small, no physicality and not a good partnership. Dier keeps playing and is not good enough. Feel for Reguillon. He has been so poor since coming back from injury. Why Ndombele and Rodon aren’t starting is beyond me. Son has needed a rest. He has looked rudderless most of this year after brilliant form. Changes should have been made earlier. Our club is a shambles. No manager, no desire or direction. Lots of players want to leave. This explains why they can’t hold a lead or go on to score 2 or 3 goals in a game. They don’t care about the club and don’t give 100% any more. The average age in the team has risen and it shows. Lacking energy. Weakest full backs and centre backs we’ve had in years. It could take 2-3 years to fix the mess our club is in.

  3. Just about everything has been said and written and not much one can add other than the fact that Levy/Lewis/Enic have made this bed;now let them lie in it.
No decent coach will want to come to Tottenham; just a desperate person a bigger failure than the club itself at present or a madman.
I appeal to all fans to boycott the club; don’t renew your season tickets, don’t buy tickets or merchandise.Very simple.

    • Yep I agree, under £nic and Levy this club will never attract big players and a big manager.
This regime has been the same ever since they took over. No one trusts the board and especially Levy, So what manager would want to work for Levy. Especially with the way they treated Boss Poch, instead of supporting they sacked him.

  4. My two cents: I must say, the Spurs have seemed an over-rated team since Moussa Dembele left (despite that more lucky than good run to the finals with Poch). The team lacks Guramba and has been devoid of a midfield engine since Moussa left. Poor Winks is so soft and unathletic, Sissoko at least offers some defensive coverage. but is almost as awful in the final third, and his heading, finishing, and foot skills are poor. N’dobele has some breathtaking talent, but an “engine” he ain’t. LeCelso also has some nice deliverables, but he lacks the iron to take on a tough middie belly to belly. Hojbjerg is not a good offensive player, but quite serviceable if sufficiently rested. Our brain-trust has been particularly terrible at finding a rotation that has kept our lads fresh enough or hungry enough to compete during the post Dembele period. Yeah our defense can be a problem, but in the games where we looked poorest, we were dominated in the midfield. For a team with some skills, our reluctance to head (apologies to Kane), reluctance to run, and reluctance to fight makes finding an “engine” type like N’Golo Kante a screaming need.

  5. Mason made a big mistake drop out LeCelo and play Winks that really affect midfield area no attacking. Spurs had 6 players in defence area that is the main reason Spurs did not play attacking. Dele was hopeless with poor pass the ball I count his mistake with passing the ball 14 times which caused no attacking which affect forward

    Spurs play

  6. Mason is a patsy. He is picking players to play that the chairman and the board want him to pick. The reason for this is to get their stock up come the summer or for next season. A manager that does this is never going to win anything because he is not picking his best players for that game. This is mess is only going to get worse because levy and the board have not got a clue football wise.

  7. Agree with all above. Bale Le celsco should have started. Son has been poor for a while and Kane cannot seem to fire on all cylinders.. we should try a few youngsters on Sunday at Leicester.. what have we to lose ?

  8. Been following THFC for 60yrs and I cannot EVER remember such a squad of overpaid overrated and spineless players…my/our club on the PITCH is in a real mess and IMO its gonna get worse b4 it gets better…the next manager must have connections because WHY would any player with ability and passion want to play for Spurs…I live 200 miles away from the BEST stadium in the world….I do feel very sorry for the local supporters who live with this issue constantly but I am only 20 miles from Manchester & Liverpool so my predicament is now for the first time just as BAD ??

  9. Gutted by last night non performance, but as soon as I saw the team sheet I knew what was coming. Overrun in midfield for 80 minutes, Mason stood on the touch line and did nothing until 75th minute. Winks isn’t strong enough as a holding midfield player and there was no creativity leaving Son & Harry looking like bystanders. The first goal was Reguillons fault but the second Winks put him under pressure by passing back to him rather than clearing the ball. Dread to think what is going to happen on Sunday with Leicester needing a big win!!
