Tottenham have begun discussions to sign Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard, according to The Times.
Vestergaard, who scored three goals in 30 Premier League appearances last season, has entered the final year of his contract at St Mary’s.
And The Times claims Spurs have told Southampton they are interested in signing the 28-year-old Denmark international this summer.
The report says the Saints value Vestergaard at over £18 million, which isn’t too steep – but Tottenham may hope to bring the price down given his contract situation.
Meanwhile, the story also suggests Spurs are keen on Vestergaard’s Denmark teammate Joachim Andersen, who spent last season on loan at Fulham from Lyon.
The French club are said to be asking for £25 million for Andersen, so if it’s one or the other, Tottenham will probably go for Vestergaard.
That said, The Times believes Spurs want to bring in at least two new defenders for next season – so perhaps the Londoners will target both players.
Either way it’s promising to see Tottenham are prioritising an overhaul at centre-back, something that has been desperately required for some time.
