Paul Merson has suggested Harry Kane should have pushed harder to leave Tottenham in the summer after making a poor start to the season at club level.

After an elongated summer break amid rumoured interest from Manchester City, Kane has struggled to get going for Spurs.

The England captain is yet to score in the Premier League this term and has looked far from his best physically, especially in Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea.

And Merson, who spent much of his career playing for Tottenham’s fierce rivals Arsenal, thinks Kane could have made a bigger effort to depart north London last month.

“If you’re Harry Kane, you’re standing up front thinking, ‘Should I have really pushed a little bit harder? Should I have?’” Merson told talkSPORT.

“At the end of the day, you’ve got to think of your future. There’s no point sitting there thinking, ‘I don’t want to be disliked’, ‘I don’t want people to think that I’m ungrateful’ and all that.

“He’s done an unbelievable job for Tottenham. He needed to move on,” said Merson. He added: “He’s got to think of his future. This lad deserves to win trophies.

“He’s a phenomenal footballer and I think he should have pushed and pushed to get that move.

“He wouldn’t have become a bad person; I think people would have understood.”

There will be ongoing concerns about Kane’s fitness and application until he starts scoring again, that’s for sure.

But realistically, it’s difficult to see the 28-year-old’s goalless run going on for much longer – this is Harry Kane we’re talking about, after all.

The trouble is: Spurs simply aren’t creating enough chances, and that needs to change before Kane starts banging them in on a regular basis again.

The fans will be desperate for that to start happening when Tottenham travel to Arsenal next weekend.
