More or less every day at the moment, Tottenham are being linked with a new central defender. First there was paper talk which stated that we would sign Anton Ferdinand, then a couple of days later it was Matthew Upson, before the ‘news’ yesterday that we’re after Gary Cahill.

The Ferdinand link may have some substance considering that it was well known that we tried to sign him before deadline day. Like most Spurs fans I’m not too sure about him, but if Harry can get Assou Ekotto playing well, then who’s to say that he wouldn’t be able to polish this turd?

Upson would probably cost a lot of money and though he’s a decent player, he’s no spring chicken. I’ve not seen too much of Cahill to judge his qualities, but for the reported £20m transfer fee he would have to be something akin to the reincarnation of Bobby Moore.

Do we really need another central defender though? I know Bassong will be off to the African Nations in January, but I’d hope that either King or Woodgate (but preferably both) will be fit by then. We’ve just got Dawson back and Huddlestone or Corluka can do a job there.

My inkling is that the popular press are just lazily thinking to themselves, injured Ledley + injured Woodgate = new centre back. The other option is that they’ve got wind that King and Woodgate are finished. I guess we’ll just have to see and keep our fingers crossed that our January transfer budget is being spent on the midfield, rather than defence.
