The last time Tottenham beat Arsenal in a league game was back in 1999 and the last time they won away from home was in 1993. Even that victory came on the last day of the season, just days before Arsenal played in the FA Cup final and neither team fielded a full strength side.

So why can’t we beat them? Obviously they have a better team than us and have had for several seasons, but that is true of other local rivalries, where the results aren’t as one sided.

Manchester City for example have arguably lived even further in the shadow of United, than has been the case with us and the Scum. This didn’t stop them doing the double over their bitter rivals in 2007/08 and prior to that have had victories in 2004 (4-1) and 2002.

Everton are the poor relations to Liverpool, but that hasn’t stopped them recording league wins in 2006 and 2004, as well as knocking the Anfield outfit out of the FA Cup last season in the infamous Tic-Tac interrupted match.

Local derbies are meant to be a leveller, but ours tend to go by the form book every time. It’s not just a case of having bringing better quality players to the club, we’ve got to shake off our mental block and adopt a positive attitude.
