Does Bale deserve to be Player of the Year?

by Matthew Harris on April 12, 2011

Spurs two nominees for the PFA player of the year award are polar opposites with bookmakers to land the honour. Gareth Bale is the runaway favourite at around 2/7 with Rafael van der Vaart the rank outsider at 40/1.

Bale is some distance ahead of second favourite Nemanja Vidic and at such slim odds, there’s little point in putting your money on our Welsh midfielder to receive the honour from his peers.

So is Gareth Bale such a certainty for the award? On Saturday he looked to be heading back to his best and reminded us all of the form he showed through to the start of this year. If the vote were taken at Christmas then there really would be no point in talking about other candidates, but perhaps his injury problems might have brought others to the fore.

I have a sneaking feeling that this particular gong will end up going to Scott Parker, but as a Spurs fan I sincerely hope that Gareth comes away with it.

Dont think he does to be honest, Vidic & Parker have been alot more consistant. Nani should have won it this year, to not be included is criminal and I am a Spurs fan!!!!

agree with ossie – bale has not really done anything of note since Jan, and even before then his best performances were in europe which is not supposed to count towards the award. doesn’t he only have 1 assist and 3 goals in the prem this season?

Well of course it would be great if Bale won, but from what I have seen Modric is by far and away Spurs most likely candidate for this award and any other. But I hate having to say this but Vidic has been absolutely magnificent for Utd and to compare Parker to him is a joke.

Not even Player of the Year at Spurs let alone the league, bless him. He is magnificent; pace, power, tricks, direct, great left peg and in the air. Not done it quite enough and needs to continue to develop. Luka is the Don… (Outside shout for Gallas as second best: controversial or what?)
