Transfer rumours today link Spurs with players that would provide either a last line of defence or a first line of attack and while the name of Klass-Jan Huntelaar has emerged again, one of his Schalke 04 team mates could be unexpectedly available.

It was firmly believed that goalkeeper Manuel Neuer would be leaving his present club to join Bayern Munich at the end of the season, but the Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had this to say:

“I don’t really think we are going to find a quick agreement. And I am also not convinced Bayern and Schalke will find a price which suits us both.”

That might have left the door open for Manchester United who have to fill the gap left by Edwin van der Saar, but it’s believed that Sir Alex Ferguson has turned his attentions elsewhere after the Champions League semi final against Neuer’s present club.

That news would interest Spurs who may have publicly backed Heurelho Gomes, while privately trying to bring in a new number one. Elsewhere today, Tottenham have also been linked with Shay Given and Maarten Stekelenburg of Ajax. Stekelenburg’s club have announced that they expect him to leave, but it is felt that the Dutchman is now United’s prime target.
