Transfer Targets: Strikers

by Matthew Harris on May 20, 2011

Throughout the week we’ve looked at all areas of the Tottenham side and asked which players should be targeted in the transfer market this summer. In attack, many fans argue that our entire front line could be cleared out after a disappointing campaign, but while Robbie Keane and Roman Pavlyuchenko seem certain to leave, Defoe and Crouch could be retained for the start of 2011-12.

At least one new name should be brought in, but who will it be? Transfer rumours seem to concentrate on strikers at the moment and the list is almost endless – Hulk, Falcao, Drogba, Aguero, Rossi, Huntelaar and so on.

With a limited budget for transfer fees and wages however, are any of these names realistic? If Spurs have to drop their sights, could Forlan be the answer? Should we be trying as hard as possible to bring Dimitar Berbatov back to the Lane? Is Lukaku the man to go for?

A 20 goal a season striker could have made the difference between fifth and fourth this campaign so with cheque book in hand, who should Harry be looking to target as our new front man?

The man to make a move for is Sturridge. Chelsea will probably want to hold on to him (and should), but Sturridge knows that he can force a move if he fights for it. Chelsea do not need him. Always worth a try as he should be within financial constraints, and now has an impressive year of experience. We should sign 2 strikers however. Given that the foreign teams are viewing English clubs as exploitable, I think we should definitely pick up one or two who are here already. I still think that Connor Wickham has a lot of what we need – if not the goals tally, but he certainly has power, strength and tenacity which is almost completely missing from Pav, Crouch, Keane and Defoe. This is the sort of target we should be aiming for. Foreign targets can get a shock when they get here. I would limit any foreign target to 16m.

Sturridge looks good, but he’s had 1 good season and by all accounts could be another Defoe. He’s good but not the type we need to play with VdV.

Agree that he may not be the type to play with Vdv, but you cannot base everything around vdv. You need a set of strikers who can play with each other too. Vdv, may get injured, may leave etc… Our 4 strikers do not play well together as a pair – so that needs fixing too. The point of Sturridge is try and own someone before they hit stardom, at a cheaper price.

This dude from Internacional Leandro Damião looks worth a punt, just made his senior debut for Brazil, interestingly on his Wikipedia page it says we have already agreed a 7m fee for him…

Who do you trust more? Wikipedia or a man in the pub?

doesn’t matter who you trust, damiao shows a lot of promise, would work well with sandro, is a target man, and would probably be cheaper than either sturridge or wickham. i do however think sturridge is well worth a punt and could be a real star of the future. still not sure who i’d keep from what we have…(aside from keane, of course)

sturridge is a good shout, premier league experiance, young, has a football brain(unlike defoe/crouch) and wouldn’t break the bank. I think we should add someone like Klose who is free, will score goals and brings a winners mentality. I would have a similar mind set on our defensive & midfield problems. And as not taken a player who can’t play with VDV, I agree with Tonyrich.

Hulk, Falcao- both are in the CL next year
Drogba/Adebayor – too high of wages

Our top striker priority should be between Llorente, Rossi and Aguero. Llorente is the ideal target man. Rossi is the ideal fox in the box type player.

I strongly back Levy to splash the transfer fee cash on these players. I don’t back him to do so much on wages. But if we can get the likes of Woodgate, Bassong, Bentley, etc off of our wages, then you never know..

I think we should stick bale up front, we know he is quick, skillful, strong and can finish. Worked for Terry Henry why not our gareth?

thierry henry had the efficient use of both feet though, as much as i love bale there is a reason why most right backs show him inside. give him a year or two then (if hes still around) give it a go. why not, cant be worse than keane

Huntleaar and Aguero for me! Harry has stated that he wants to by a striker who can play with van der Vaart- Imagine a fit van der Vaart with a proper striker- this year he has scored 15 goals, if we get a striker who he can work with- Huntleaar- does it for Dutch team, did it at Ajax and did it at Real Madrid imagine how much they both could score! Aguero could be our Hernandez/ Tevez- good movement off the ball and on it, can be a real threat and will get 20 goals a season with the chances we create and with our beautiful midfield! Will also work with van der Vaart as well! They will both take some spending but we just need to get though this obstacle- get in two world class strikers and be the team we all know we can be! Also Harry wants to bring in Eden Hazard- This is what im talking about- he is bloody amazing! Just hope for our beloved clubs sake that Harry and Levy bring in the correct players!COYS!

Hulk is huge, strong, a finishing expert, pacey up the wings and a set piece specialist. He’s got all the size attributes that made Crouch valuable but with none of the flaws. He’s the man.

What about Pablo Daniel Osvaldo? Tall, strong, powerful, good in the air and can finish. Low wages and transfer fee around 10 million. He’s an option in my book. Plays for Espanyol but they signed him 2 summers ago.

Hulk would be a great choice but he seems to insist he want to continue staying in Porto. If we’re allowed to dream, I’ll say Aguero or Rossi

We need to be a little bit more realistic here.. i’d love to see Llorente, Hulk, Rossi or Aguero at Tottenham but chances are quite slim.. we didn’t make champions league this year and we dont have a budget like the teams that did make champions league.. Theres a few strikers in the french league that have caught my eye as in Moussa Sow(leading scorer), Gervinho, and Kevin Gameiro all of which we’ve been linked with and should cost less than £13m. Leandro Damiao seems promising(i’ve been loving Sandro since he join from Inter), also C. Wickham and D. Graham from the championship look on their way up. Imo we keep Defoe as competition for first spot and Crouch for Aerial threat, unfortunatley Pav and Keane have to go because of inconsistencies.

Could you imagine signing Lukaku and Drogba?.. the mentor and the protégé.
