Going down to the Championship where we now find West Ham, it was interesting to see some transfer rumours surrounding our old centre half Anthony Gardner. The 29 year old is out of contract at Hull after a loan spell at Crystal Palace.

Gardner came to Spurs back in 2000 after a couple of years at Port Vale. At the age of 18 he seemed to have a big future ahead of him and at 6 foot 5 inches he had power in the air and although he wasn’t always sure footed, he had time to develop.

Many people forget that he even won an England cap back in 2004 and when the first of Ledley’s injuries struck, a few people even began to suggest he could be our club captain’s natural successor.

Somewhere along the line it all went wrong and after an unsuccessful loan spell at Everton, he left the club for Hull City where he hasn’t really excelled either. Palace fans however, seem to have taken to him during his time on loan there and he played his part in steering them away from League One.

Palace were believed to be interested in him on a permanent basis but a move to Birmingham was in the frame before Alex McLeish resigned over the weekend. Now it seems that West Ham are stepping in and he could be set to move across London.

Many Spurs fans will remember his winning goal against the men from Upton Park a few years back and a few would certainly wish him well in his search for a new club.
