Our team to face Stoke – What’s yours?

by Matthew Harris on September 20, 2011

We’ve already seen that manager Harry Redknapp could welcome back both Sandro and William Gallas for tonight’s match with Stoke City and while the rest of the side is still to be announced, the manager gave a strong hint as to who would be involved.

“We could have Sandro and William Gallas back, Pav needs another game, van der Vaart is back, Gomes, Bassong, Corluka – that’s not a bad team, is it?” The manager said.

The side looks like being a mix of senior players fitting in alongside some of those who featured in Thursday’s Europa League tie with PAOK so we could welcome back Heurelho Gomes for a rare start in goal this evening.

In front of the Brazilian, Harry hinted that it could be Corluka, Gallas, Bassong and Townsend while Sandro may take his usual slot in midfield and play alongside Livermore and maybe Tom Carroll and VDV.

If Pav plays up front, it seems unlikely to say the least that Adebayor will be risked and that could mean another start for Harry Kane. Aside from these names, Ryan Fredericks, Kyle Walker, Yago Falque and others will battle to be involved.

Here’s our team to face Stoke, what’s yours?

VDV just back from injury wouldn’t risk him and gallas played earlier.

Gallas played in a friendly against Brentford today
Friedel is 40 and will/should only be used in the league

Cudicini, BAE, Kaboul, Bassong, Charlie, Niko, Sandro, Livermore, Gio, VDV, Pavs

Harry wants a go at this cup (as he should) and will field a legit team. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Bale starting out on the left as opposed to Niko. Also wouldn’t be surprised if Scott Parker was in the center instead of Livermore. More likely, if need be, he’ll bring those guys on in the 2nd half if the game is at a standstill.

Priorities should be as follows – Top 4, Carling Cup, Europa, FA

Gomes – Corluka-Kaboul-Bassong-Assou. Livermore-Sandro-Townsend. Gio-Pav-Niko 4-3-3 remember this is stoke who will be strong and there home record is pretty good. Is Hudd fit? If so I’d of played him instead of townsend.

First team players should not be risked. But with Gallas playing earlier Walker will have to fill in a right back again.

Gomes
Walker Corluka Bassong Townsend
Gio Sandro Livermore Krancjar
VDV Pav

Carroll, Falque, Kane to come on at some stage.

When does Harry ever play anything but a 4-4-2 or a 4-4-1-1. Why would he do it away against Stoke in a cup tie that he actually cares about?

Gomes
Corluka–Bassong–Gallas/Kaboul–Townsend
Sandro–Livermore
Kranjcar–VdV–Falque
Pav

Have Gio sub for VdV after an hour to keep him from injury.
Gomes should play — we want clubs to see him do well so we can sell him in January.
I’d rather have Townsend at LM but who at LB? BAE should rest and Rose is still injured (I think).
