Up until now, Spurs have only been mentioned in passing with regards to a move for Belgian star Eden Hazard but reports of a possible transfer to White Hart Lane gathered some considerable momentum over the weekend.

It was however, the suggestion of a transfer involving another Belgian international that caught the eye. Jan Vertonghen is an experienced, 24 year old defender with over 30 international caps to his name and it’s been thought up until now that he would head to Arsenal, in view of an obvious link to former team mate Thomas Vermaelen.

Vertonghen currently plays for Ajax, who incidentally shipped in six goals over the weekend and it’s thought that Spurs have had the player watched. Primarily a central defender, he can also play in midfield and this versatility is also in his favour.

It’s suggested that £10m could be enough to lure Vertonghen to Spurs in January with Sebastien Bassong heading out of the club. Initially therefore, his chances could be limited but with the long term successor to Ledley King still being sought, time could very much be on Vertonghen’s side.

It’s ridiculous to judge a player because their team had a bad day. ManU lost 6-1 not so long ago — obviously they have lousy players.
I believe even Spurs have lost before (it’s been so long, though…) and I’m quite happy with our squad.

As to Vertonghen — YES PLEASE! He would have the second half of the season (and next preseason) to adjust to the team/league — which would be good. By the start of next season both Gallas and Ledley will be taking more of a backup role. Bassong will be gone. We’d have Dawson, Kaboul, and Caulker in serious 1st team contention and adding a 4th would be only prudent.
He would either push those three to be better players or take the starting position himself. Either way, Spurs win.

And for 10m when Cahill will be 14+? Do we even need to consider this?

Vertonghen, Damiao, and Goetze (plus either securing Ade or signing Llorrente or equivalent) and I don’t know what else we’d need to do to improve the squad.
…well, and a young understudy to Friedel since I assume that even he will eventually need to retire.
