Yesterday morning began with stories suggesting that Spurs were about to close in on Barcelona striker David Villa and make the Spaniard their second signing of the transfer window after Paulinho. However, as the day progressed, an isolated rumour linking the player with Atletico Madrid quicly became fact as the 31 year old set up a 5 million Euro deal.

Opinion was largely split over Villa: On the one hand he was an injury prone, ageing striker who hadn’t proved himself in the Premier League while others felt he could easily replicate his world class talent at the Lane.

But whatever your feelings may have been, David Villa has gone leaving Spurs to look elsewhere if they are to bring striking reinforcements into the club.

It was inevitable therefore that rumours of a swoop for Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke would arise after reports of the Belgian International’s confirmed transfer request. There’s no accusation of unproven Premiership ability here with 19 league goals in 34 games for a struggling side and at 22, the forward has nine years on David Villa.

But the fee would naturally increase too with claims starting at around £20m so will Spurs really enter the hunt for a player who is attracting a ton of interest across Europe?

  1. That “Villa to Spurs” was just a giant wind-up that went viral methinks invented by bored internet journo’s (again) and jumped-on by many half-baked spuds !
Either Benteke or Soldado would make me very happy as long as we get em in NOW. Please no more last minute signings that cost us 7 points in the first 3 winnable games last season, that ultimately was the real reason we missed UCL. We triggered Paulinho’s transfer clause early so that’s a good sign, however one swallow doesn’t make a summer.
Forget the Croatian Jedwood and get a top striker in ASAP and bring relief to thousands of long suffering Spurs fans PLEASE.
