Almost exactly a year ago, Jan Vertonghen stated his desire to continue playing in central defence, as his versatility was helping Spurs through a problem period.
“At Tottenham I play left-back because of injuries. Marc Wilmots (Belgium’s manager) likes that perhaps, but I’ve got other ambitions,” Vertonghen said at the time.
12 months ago, Benoit Assou-Ekotto was injured and Danny Rose out on loan at Sunderland. Now the position has been reversed with Danny on the sidelines and BAE over at QPR yet still we have issues at left back.
Yesterday at Villa we looked more comfortable on that side, even though we were tested in the middle and Hugo’s early kicking put us under a little more pressure. With Jan out on the left, it also gives AVB a chance to give the new signing Vlad Chiriches game time, while Younes Kaboul waits patiently in the background.
Clearly the right footed Kyle Naughton wasn’t working in that position so has Andre found our best defensive formation – until January at least?
