As the 2013-14 season drew to a close, it seemed probable that Tottenham centre back Jan Vertonghen would be the subject of major transfer speculation over the summer. The Belgian’s body language was poor and as top four football continued to slip away, he was the one player in the squad most likely to move on.

However, after a strong World Cup with Belgium, positive rumours started to emerge and over the weekend, the defender confirmed that he was happy to stay at White Hart Lane.

Speaking to Belgian radio, Jan also confirmed that he was in discussions over a new contract.

“I still had a four-year contract but I see that they have offered me a new five-year contract as a great sign of confidence,” he said.

“It goes without saying that I would like to stay at Tottenham.”

News on that contract will doubtless follow but for now, are you pleased that Jan is staying or are you concerned that there may be a repeat of some very disinterested performances on the pitch?

  1. So he should be happy to stay!! We pay his wages… hes a great player but needs to show the supporters how he played in his first season. Coys

  2. Campbell was good and of same calibre of Vertonghen but they only let him go because we had Ledley King who was absolute top class. Coys
