We’ve become used to reading platitudes from Spurs players ahead of a game – ‘we’re all targeting three points’ etc – but Federico Fazio’s comments actually make interesting reading. The first question is whether he is delusional in his claim that the club can win the league – perhaps the centre half thinks we want to hear it or maybe he actually believes it.

“I think at Tottenham we have very good players who can fight for first position in the Premier League,” Fazio said in the Mail.

“We can fight for the Champions League and the Europa League. But we need to improve like a team, to be like a team because I think we have got very good players.”

The Argentine went on to argue against Emmanuel Adebayor’s subsequently disputed claims that the players have an issue with the fans when playing at home.

“I think this is not the problem. We need to play like a team on the pitch. I think that we have very good players, good enough to be higher in the Premier League,” he added.

“There have only been 10 or 11 matches. We need to improve some things but I think we will stay in the top positions of the Premier League.”

There are a number of questions that you can read into this – team spirit may have been questioned and while this isn’t exactly a ‘we’re going to win the league’ statement, it does intimate that we have quality players who are underperforming and avoiding some of the criticism while we focus on the Chairman.

Of course, if you are to win any trophy then it helps if you stay on the pitch.
