Tottenham opened their Europa League campaign with a 3-1 win over Qarabag. Son Heung-Min scored twice on his home debut while Kevin Wimmer, Kieran Trippier and Clinton N’Jie made their first appearances for the club.
Trippier gave away a penalty that saw Spurs go behind early on, but the hosts rallied before the break, taking the lead through two Son goals.
Erik Lamela added a third late on to seal the victory. There was plenty of reaction to the final goal on Twitter, as well as some much-deserved praise for Tottenham’s standout player – Dele Alli.
Here’s the third goal and the best of the tweets.
Haha – "And Erik Lamela feels like a worthy footballer again!". Bit harsh…

Scenes all around really. Their keeper booked for time-wasting at 2-1 down and the captain collapsing with cramp in the build up to 3-1.

The relief on Lamela's face was palpable. Reminiscent of Soldado.

I've only caught the last 20 minutes but Erik Lamela has looked very sharp and promising. #COYS

Gentle whisper that the much maligned Lamela has been directly involved in 3 of our last 4 goals. But yeah he's crap let's get rid etc….

Erik Lamela sold the goalkeeper more dummies than Mothercare before his dinky-toy finish. Fans must give him confidence to go with his class

Not sure if Lamela's past performances are hindering opinions but think he's done alright tonight. Deserved his goal.

Wimmer & Toby have looked solid for Spurs tonight. Fullbacks defensively poor, not helped them out, nor has the flaky midfield ahead of them

Delle Ali my man of the match by some distance.
— Alan (@hotspur423) September 17, 2015
Sooooo Dele Alli's the one isn't he?
— Jay Jaffa (@jayjaffa) September 17, 2015
#thfc FT, 3-1 to Spurs. Plenty of plus points, not least Son's brace as a striker. Alli, Townsend and Wimmer all did well. Lamela improved!

Slag off the Europa League all you like, but imagine how miserable our lives would be on a diet consisting solely of Premier League stodge.
— Bankrupt (@bankruptspurs) September 17, 2015
Alli is a real 'Tottenham' player. Always attacks with purpose and has the ability to get bums off seats. Not enough of them around
— Paul O Keefe (@pokeefe1) September 17, 2015
Wish Spurs would give the Europa just a bit of oomph. We're traditionally a Cup team & currently miles away from 4th. It should be fun!

Good win in the end, Alli looks class hope he starts again Sunday #COYS

Loved the one touch passing – Poch has a great vision. Lams and alli combining were great to watch. shame we now have to go back to the rustic stodgy defences of the other premiership clubs which stifle our young talent. but lams an alli nd the other thoughtful, creative youngsters will find a way second half of the season.
