This headline is not an example of hyperbole. If Eric Dier can carry on playing like he has of late, he will be lining up in England’s midfield in Euro 2016.

After all, England hardly have an embarrassment of riches in this area. Roy Hodgson has more often than not played without a defensively-minded midfielder since Scott Parker was put out to pasture, such is the dearth of talent in this area.

Mauricio Pochettino also played without a dedicated holding player last season but this season he has started Dier as one in each and every game. More often than not the 20-year old has rewarded him by being the best Spurs player on the pitch.

This was again true on Saturday when Dier and the even younger Dele Alli took on the muscle of Manchester City’s midfield and came out on top. Watch his mix of cool passing and crunching tackles below, with these highlights of his performance against City.
