Kenya tonight failed to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, which means Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama will remain with his club this coming January.

The midfielder would have been jetting off to Gabon in January had Kenya qualified, but their hopes of competing in next year’s Cup of Nations were dashed after a 1-1 draw in Zambia on Sunday afternoon.

Kenya needed to win to stand any chance of qualifying. Instead their 1-1 draw saw them finish bottom of Group E below Guinea-Bissau, Congo and Zambia.

Although it’s a shame for a Spurs player to miss out on playing in a major tournament for his country, Tottenham fans (and Mauricio Pochettino) are likely to be quietly happy Wanyama will be available for his club in what is usually a crucial month.

If and when injuries and suspensions begin to occur in the new year, it’s crucial Spurs have a capable squad. After all, that’s why players like Wanyama, Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko were brought in: to bolster the squad.
