Two first half goals saw Monaco leave London with a 2-1 win in Tottenham’s Champions League opener at Wembley.
Bernardo Silva broke the deadlock with a well-placed finish after a quick counter-attack by the visitors before Thomas Lemar doubled Monaco’s lead with a powerful close range effort.
Toby Alderweireld thumped in a header just before half time to get Spurs back in it, but it wasn’t enough as the hosts fell short in front of a record 85,011 crowd.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the result and performance.
Spurs mostly poor, but Monaco defended very well. Not in Europa League any more lads, need to step it up several notches in Moscow.

Pochettino using Kane-deep-bring-on-another-striker as his solution to everything will annoy me as much as Martin Jol's play-three-strikers.

Nothing to do with Wembley… just bad defensive moments.

Urgh. Sickener. Kane's chance was the one – at this level you've gotta score those.

The second half was a lot better. We'll look back on this match and think that Dembele probably should've started.

Not the result we hoped for, but it was absolutely glorious hearing 80,000 plus Yids singing from Wembley. #COYS

Please nobody try and sugarcoat that. That's rubbish. No way shape or form are they a better side. Naive, scared performance. #THFC

Tottenham gave Monaco a two-goal head start and something to defend. Better when Dembele came on – have to say Pochettino got the team wrong

Wouldn't use Wembley as much of an excuse, personally. Size suited #THFC well enough. Slack mistakes and Alli starting deep the real issues.

if you didn't think we would fuck it up in our record breaking attendance game then you're not spurs tbh
— Billie (@Billie_T) September 14, 2016
Naive to think that cos Dele bossed it deeper v a poor Stoke in a stretched game that it would work against these, stick with what got us 3rd

First game in champions league for most players, first game at wembley. Plenty of games to go, we'll only improve #COYS

Gutted is an understatement. Sluggish start, avoidable chances being given away, good period for maybe only 10/15 mins, but that's it.

What a shame, bottom of the league….
Kane is shite haha
Vertongan keep backing off you might end up in the stands…
