Mauricio Pochettino has revealed deciding not to sign a defensive midfielder in the summer of 2015 and putting his trust in Eric Dier was one of the biggest risks he has taken at Tottenham.
Spurs were seemingly in need of a holding midfielder at the beginning of the 2015/16, but Pochettino decided to convert Dier from a defender in a central midfielder instead of recruiting.
“Eric was maybe our first signing when we arrived at Tottenham,” explained the Spurs boss. “We analysed everything – his background, history, everything.”
“We took a big risk not signing another midfielder and it has been fantastic (having Dier in midfield).”
He added: “I think the most important thing last season was he was the player in the squad that played the most.
“To play in different positions adds more value to the player and that is why we’re so happy with him. All managers love to have this type of player in your squad.”
Dier might not be the best player in Tottenham’s squad, but he is certainly one of the most important given his versatility.
The 23-year-old is expected to start against West Ham on Saturday. Do you agree with our predicted line-up?
